SAN ANTONIO — Sarah Tevis Poteet, DDS, of Dallas recently won the Texas Dental Association’s New Dentist Leadership award. Presented annually, the award is given to an Association member who has demonstrated extraordinary levels of leadership, professional growth, ethical conduct, community and professional volunteerism, and continuing education while less than 10 years out of dental school. Dr. Poteet was nominated for the award by the Dallas County Dental Society, and chosen out of a field of five candidates by her peers within the Association.

The presentation occurred May 5, 2011 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, as part of the Texas Dental Association’s 141st annual convention. Dr. Poteet received a standing ovation by the House of Delegates, the governing body of the Association.

Born in Waco, Dr. Poteet graduated from UTHSC San Antonio Dental School in 2003. Since then has distinguished herself in many aspects of her career, including opening her own successful dental practice, and being an active member in organized dentistry. She has even been interviewed on ABC television’s “The View” with Barbara Walters as a recipient of Johnson & Johnson’s “Remarkable Woman Award.”

Dr. Poteet currently practices aesthetic and family dentistry on Douglas Ave. in Dallas. She also volunteers with the Dallas area Hopeful Smiles Program, an organization dedicated to providing much-needed dental care to women whose smiles have been damaged by poverty, neglect, violence, and illness. As a recipient of the New Dentist Leadership award, Dr. Poteet automatically becomes the Texas Dental Association’s nominee for the American Dental Association’s award of the same name.

The Texas Dental Association (TDA) is the preeminent, statewide, professional membership organization for Texas dentists, and is headquartered in Austin. It is a constituent of the American Dental Association. Charted in 1871, the TDA currently boasts over 8,400 members, making it the third largest statewide dental association in the US. Its mission is to protect and advance the practice of dentistry in Texas, thereby improving the overall quality of oral healthcare for all Texans.
